Major Melon has been a part of the Mtn Dew family for quite some time, with its first appearance coming two years ago in various sizes of the original Mtn Dew soda alongside a lower calorie, zero sugar variant. Set to make its way out to the mountain of Mtn Dew stockists is a Major Melon Mtn Dew Energy drink, and true to its name, it is a refreshing watermelon taste, much more self-explanatory than the likes of Pitch Black. During Pitch Black II's release, there was an online promotion where a hardcore Dew fan named Cliff did "The Pitch Black Experiment" for 90 days.Mtn Dew Energy has been getting a lot of fun and limited-time flavor extensions more recently, and last year was full of them, starting with the legendary Baja Blast, then we code the cherry experience Code Red, and the eye-catching Pitch Black. Both Pitch Black II and VooDEW (2020) share similarities in that the flavors served as sequels to and are similar in packaging, art style, and drink color to that of their predecessors.Pitch Black II was promoted during the 2005 NASCAR Nextel Cup Series Banquet 400 Presented by ConAgra Foods race at Kansas Speedway. This flavor was the second Halloween-themed flavor to release, the first being Pitch Black, the third being VooDEW (2019), the fourth being VooDEW (2020), the fifth being VooDEW (2021), the sixth being VooDEW (2022), and the seventh being VooDEW (2023).The dark purple, citrus punch flavored soda first debuted in the fall of 2004. It should be an emotional moment, but it occurs all too easily. This necessitates that Anakin leave his mother. Sensing the boy’s abilities, Qui-Gon wins the right to free him. The key new revelation here concerns the miraculous nature of his birth, which may be connected to the origins of the Force.Īnakin lives with his mother on the planet Tatooine, where they are slaves to a grotesque, winged creature called Watto. From the other films, we already know that Anakin grows up to be corrupted by the Dark Side and become Darth Vader, as well as the father of hero Luke Skywalker. Young Jake Lloyd, who plays Anakin, is a fair-haired, good-looking kid, but unaffecting in a role that is underwritten, given its significance to the “”Star Wars” legacy. (And don’t go to “”Phantom Menace” because you’re a Samuel L. There is little insight into the roots of their relationship. But “”Phantom Menace” offers only the rudimentaries of a relationship between its adult heroes, the young Jedi apprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) and his long-haired mentor, Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson).Īt the film’s start, they remove their hoods, immediately get into the first of several big lightsaber battles with a seemingly overpowering enemy, and never look back. Maybe Jar Jar would be easier to take if the human characters were better. It’s an attempt at a new Chewbacca, but it’s as if Barney, instead of Harrison Ford, played Han Solo. But a little bit of Jar Jar dialogue - like “”Who suh are you suh” or “”Is you thinking youse people gonna die?” - goes a long, long, long, long, way. Jar Jar is in this movie as much as anyone. And there is an allegedly “”cute” creature called Jar Jar (pronounced Zsa-Zsa) Binks, a floppy-eared lizardlike thing with stand-up eyes, a flickering tongue, awkward body movements and an annoying vocabulary of mangled-English baby talk. The action scenes have the kind of relentless PG-rated intensity that will appeal to older preteens, for better or worse.īut the central character, 10-year-old Anakin Skywalker, is just a little boy. Yet even then, it has a split personality. Lucas wants this event to have the excitement of “”Ben-Hur’s” chariot race, but it is closer to a numbingly repetitious video game.Īll these elements give “”Phantom Menace” appeal for young viewers. Legislators sit in box-seatlike platforms that detach and float through the air like rafts on water when they want to speak.Īlso impressive is the desolate Mos Espa Arena on the desertlike planet Tatooine, where some 100,000 spectators gather as Jabba the Hutt presides over a NASCAR-like Podrace. So, too, is the cavernous Galactic Senate Chamber on the skyscraper-packed planet of Coruscant. The underwater city of Otoh Gunga, protected by gigantic membrane-like floating bubbles, is a noteworthy accomplishment. “Phantom Menace” does offer the kind of sights and sounds that kids should relish - lightsaber battles, heroic children, fantastical creatures, exotic cities and a mysterious teenage queen.Ī lot of this is fine - Lucas and his crew at Industrial Light & Magic can conjure worlds that are as delightful as they are strange. The film made me want to visit a park or a zoo the artificiality of its computer-generated world grows suffocatingly fakey. ![]() ![]() “”Phantom Menace” lacks these.Īnd for that matter, computer effects have their limits - there are times in “”Phantom Menace” when it looks as if the backgrounds have been superimposed. ![]() It also takes good writing and inspired acting, as well as plot points that are clever and detailed rather than perfunctory. Perhaps he has become too lost in his mastery of computer-generated effects and digital sound to remember that creativity in the movies is not just a technical thing. Lucas has had 16 years to imagine what his “”prequel” to that trilogy would be - “”Return of the Jedi” was made in 1983. Maybe, as he claims, he just wanted to make a high-tech adventure film for 12-year-olds and the rest is just the creation of an overstimulated, overpopulated media.īut he is responsible for “”Phantom Menace” being nowhere near as good as the original “”Star Wars” trilogy. Digital Replica Edition Home Page Close Menu The spatial audio works really well, and the different customization options for sound performance are welcome. Most of the V2's features are enabled through the USB sound card and Razer's Synapse software, so this headset is mainly for PC gamers looking for an excellent wired experience for under $100. That said, the V2 sounds excellent out of the box. It enables many headphone and microphone audio tweaks, so you can get the best sound in both directions. The card also automatically enables the THX Spatial Audio app through Razer's Synapse software platform, offering surprisingly strong directional imaging thanks to clever mixing between the drivers.Īs an added benefit, the sound card enables audio tweaks through Razer Synapse that aren't available on headsets connected only through a 3.5mm cable. The V2 is an analog headset that connects to a 3.5mm jack just like the Astro Gaming A10, but it's meant to be plugged into the included USB audio adapter that provides surround sound audio processing. ![]() Fortunately, the Razer Blackshark V2 offers spatial audio through its bundled USB sound card and audio software, all in one affordable, wired package. If you want to spend $100 or less on a gaming headset, you're probably going to settle for stereo audio, or rely on separate surround processing. It also offers generally strong audio performance for just under $100, making it a strong catch-all wireless headset for everyone except Xbox gamers. The USB-C transmitter provides low-latency, high-quality wireless sound when connected to those devices, and the Bluetooth addition makes it even more useful on the go. At least, for PC, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation gamers. Much like how the Astro Gaming A10 is the best budget choice for gamers looking for any kind of headset, the Barracuda X is the best budget choice for gamers looking for a wireless headset. That said, it's a nice upgrade over the stereo-only first Barracuda X. The new headset adds 7.1-channel simulated surround sound for PC use, but it isn't quite as accurate as the THX Spatial Audio found in higher-end Razer headsets. It's light and comfortable, with excellent audio performance and a clear, detachable mic. You can pair it with your phone (or Nintendo Switch, since Nintendo added Bluetooth audio) and listen to music without the transmitter, making it work as a standalone pair of wireless headphones.Īll of that flexibility doesn't matter if it feels or sounds bad, and fortunately the Barracuda X punches above its weight class in those categories. Razer added a big feature to this version, though: Bluetooth connectivity. The 2022 model uses a nearly identical USB-C transmitter to its predecessor that lets it work with any PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4/5, or Android phone with a USB-C port (Xbox isn't supported), and has the same 3.5mm wireless connectivity. The Razer Barracuda X isn't the fanciest or most luxurious-feeling gaming headset, but it's one of the most inexpensive and flexible in terms of delivering high-quality audio. It works with PCs, the Nintendo Switch in handheld mode, and the current- and last-generation PlayStation and Xbox consoles through the headset jacks in their controllers. As an analog wired headset, it's compatible with every gaming platform available besides smartphones that lack headphone jacks. The A10 is best for gamers who can push a bit past the $50 mark to get excellent quality. You can find other wired headsets for less than $60, but this one simply offers the best experience for the price. ![]() The A10 is also the least expensive headset in this list. It sounds excellent, with a clear boom microphone and nicely padded, fabric-covered earcups that you can comfortably wear for long periods of time. The second-generation Astro Gaming A10 is the follow-up to Astro Gaming's long-running wired headset, and this model is superior both in build and audio quality. ![]() As long as it sounds good and feels comfortable, that's really all you need. As long as you have a headset jack (or separate headphone and microphone jacks), you can use a simple wired headset. However, this doesn't mean that there isn't plenty of room for an analog gaming headset. Most gaming headsets are digital in some way, connecting either wired over USB or wirelessly over Bluetooth or a separate USB transmitter. That, along with Billy’s search for his birth mother, and his inability to find a home he can fit into, is where the plot finds its footing.ĭespite this, the screenplay never falls prey to melodrama, and the usual genre tropes are acknowledged, then promptly downplayed. Even the villain Dr Thaddeus Sivana (Mark Strong) is forged by how his father and brother treat him as a young boy. Family is the narrative thread that binds the film. Some of the best scenes include Shazam discovering his abilities with Freddy, and they’re a joy to behold. It also becomes obvious that Billy Batson (Asher Angel) isn’t familiar with how a powered individual works, and that allows superhero nerd Freddy Freeman (Jack Dylan Grazer) to show him the ropes. He’s able to portray a sincere, yet immature adolescent trying to take on the big, bad world and yet, doesn’t know his own limits as a superhero. This is especially applicable to Zachary Levi, whose playfulness as the title character never gets old. Under Sandberg’s direction, they give their characters the right amount of self-awareness without veering too far into camp. But that sentiment wouldn’t translate if it wasn’t conveyed so well by the cast. He maintains an irreverent and exuberant approach throughout. ![]() ![]() Sandberg captures the imagination, enthusiasm, and pure glee of a little kid playing with his/ her toys. It quickly establishes a comical, yet sensitive tonality which allows the audience to get on-board with an otherwise outlandish premise. Shazam! Review: From its opening frames, ‘Shazam!’ sets out to address the origin tale pitfalls inherent to the superhero genre. Along the way, he encounters a mysterious wizard (Djimon Hounsou) who gives him the ability to transform into an adult with superpowers (Zachary Levi) by merely saying the word ‘Shazam’. Shazam! Story: Street-smart Billy Batson (Asher Angel) runs away from one foster home to the next, in search of his birth mother. It is an inferential process that may be used throughout an entire assessment, such as causal assessments using the CADDIS framework ( ). Contrary to some usages, WoE is not a type of assessment. We begin by clarifying terms and the concepts to which they apply.Īn environmental WoE is an inferential process that assembles, evaluates, and integrates evidence to perform a technical inference in an assessment. Much of the confusion and controversy surrounding WoE results from vague and inconsistent terminology used to describe basic concepts. In practice, assessors should apply it flexibly to ensure that each application is fit for purpose. Like the framework and guidelines for ecological risk assessment ( USEPA 1992 USEPA 1998), it is intended to provide a common process and terminology that can be adapted and applied to many different assessment problems and contexts. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) assessments. Its major elements have been employed in externally peer‐reviewed U.S. 2007 Suter and Cormier 2011) and health risk assessment ( Rhomberg et al. This framework is new, but it is derived from the diverse WoE approaches in ecological assessment ( Fox 1991 Burton et al. Hence this framework transparently organizes and presents judgments and does not engage in pseudo‐quantification (assigning numbers to qualities) or in ignoring the qualitative aspects of an issue so as to make it quantitative (e.g., limiting assessment of causation to correlations). Finally, the properties of evidence that are weighed such as relevance are not quantitative. In addition, some qualities, particularly causation, have no quantitative metric (Norton et al. For example, some evidence may indicate that a cause and effect are co-located while other evidence indicates that affected organisms are altered in characteristic ways, so the evidence is not commensurable and cannot be quantitatively combined. While quantitative analysis is essential to generating evidence, there is no way to quantitatively combine the heterogeneous evidence that appears in environmental assessments and serves different purposes. WoE to infer qualities employs both qualitative and quantitative methods, and it inevitably requires subjective judgment. However, WoE may also be employed to derive quantities such as benchmark concentrations or half‐lives of chemicals (Suter et al. The framework presented here can be used to integrate multiple pieces of evidence and to infer qualities such as causation, teratogenicity, or impairment. ![]() The approach is potentially applicable to human health and welfare assessments, but ecological assessors have, in general, been more accepting of the formal weighing of multiple types of evidence. The USEPA (2016) has developed and adopted WoE guidelines for ecological assessments. Although the weighing is often done by unstructured narratives or narratives guided by a list of considerations, an explicit weight-of-evidence (WoE) process can increase the defensibility of results ( Weed 2005). Such inferences require weighing the evidence. For example, inferring the cause of an observed biological impairment could involve evidence derived from conventional laboratory tests, ambient media tests, biomarkers, biological surveys, chemical analyses, and models. ![]() ![]() Inferences in environmental assessment often involve multiple and heterogeneous pieces of evidence. All you have to do is open an XML file in your /Paperless Dropbox folder in a web browser. ![]() Unfortunately for me, I am at an office computer all day, and I do not have my Dropbox files sitting in my hard drive. So to view those XML files I would have to download them from Dropbox to my work computer hard drive and then open them in the browser. ![]() To overcome this handicap, I have written a tool that will allow you to view any number of your Paperless lists online. All you have to do is make the lists you want to view shareable, and enter these URLs into a form. Shared Dropbox URLs are not easily discoverable, and if you really don't want someone to accidentally come upon one of your XML files, then don't make the URL public. The script I developed generates each of your lists in an HTML table. The script just reads your XML files locally, so you can feel secure that the view of your lists that you see in the browser is not viewable by anyone else online. You can even just download the html file to your hard drive and use it locally (that is, open it from the hard drive into your browser). To see how it works, visit the page, enter the following four Dropbox URLs into the input field, and then hit Publish. These are the four lists that come pre-installed when you download Paperless to your iOS device. You should see four lists generated below the input form. If you want to view your own lists, just get the shared Dropbox URL for each, and enter them as a comma-separated list. This is version 1.0, and I will likely work on styling and generating more of a grid than having the lists stacked on top of each other.
